Where are you going to run to?

What is your refuge?

If you say, “The LORD is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” – Psalm 91:9-12

As a boy I was very religious and I can remember thinking, “If I just get one more friend to join the church God will…..” or “If I just burn another rock and roll album God will…..” but this isn’t how God’s Love works- this is human understanding of Divine Love.

I use the above example to share how easily something other than God can become our refuge. In the above case it was human understanding. Trying to fit God into the box of human capability and knowledge.

Are there other refuges that are hurtful?

ABSOLUTELY!!

Here are a few although certainly not an exhaustive list:

1)    My pain or hurt- Some people and for a time me included run to their pain for comfort.

2)   My works or effort- Similar to the example above but more of a “look and see what I did for God” mindset.

3)   My ego or knowledge- This is how part of the passage above was used by Satan to tempt Christ. The problem was Satan forgot the first part- “The Lord is my refuge!”

Remember Grace-Full living is the understanding that whatever is happening at this moment in time has passed through His knowledge and He is capable and His Grace is sufficient for me and you.

When you begin to feel that things are getting out of control do what Jesus did- go to the bathroom or any place you can get alone with God for a moment. Take several deep breaths, relax as best you can and when you come back to normal breathing:

Breathe in and say:

Be still and know

Breathe out and say:

He is my refuge

Practice this way when you need to get back to The Refuge and know that He has you wrapped in His arms of Peace and Love!
