Darkness through all of human history has developed, grown and flourished when man in his stupidity limits love. When we try to carve out the ones that are or “should be” loved from “others” we are doing the exact same thing as the religious leaders in the time of Christ, Adolf Hitler during his life time and terrorist do today. What made the message of Jesus so electrfying and drew people to Him was His non-judgmental, All inclusive and Unconditional Love that He longs to see shine through each of us.
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.” – John 8:12-13
What is “light” to an addict? What is “light” to the person who suffers PTSD or to the person who was raped as a child and now as an adult continues to do what was done to them?
Many like to look at this passage and think it means we have to try harder to follow the law. Many think this passage is about human effort to stay in “the light” but I maintain that Grace is not a self improvement plan and Christ is not a weak pansy.
In the passage above it was the Pharisees who were weak as they tried to throw standards for acceptance in the face of Christ. Much like religious people today in a bid for acceptance the Pharisees of old had to have something that made them think they were special. To the Grace based being who follows Christ they know that Nothing makes them special or better than anyone else therefore the focus is on Love for others. You see “light” for the addict, the child molester, the person suffering PTSD or the hooker on the street is Love and acceptance like Christ gave All who He met.
